reported 225 new cases of Covid-19 on Thursday. This is for the first time in the entire month of May that the number of new positive cases in Ahmedabad has gone below 250 in a single day. Eight new cases were reported in
, taking the district total to 233. There were 250 cases on May 2, after which cases have remained above the mark. As many as 17 deaths were reported on Thursday.
Ahmedabad had reported 234 cases on April 29 and 249 on April 30. Since then the number of cases per day has never been below 250, until Thursday. Ironically, the highest single day jump was also reported this month—349 on May 5.
The number of deaths has been lower than in past few days. On May 17 and 18, there were 31deaths, while 21were reported on May 19 and 26 on May 20.
Of the total 9,309 cases reported in city till now, the number of active cases stands at 5,223, while the death toll is 612. As many as 3,258 have been discharged till now.
Zone-wise, the maximum active cases are in central zone with 1,183; South zone has 1,081; North 802; East 584; West 584; South-west 225 and North-west 159. Among these, 709 are super spreaders.

371new cases in Gujarat
With 371 new
cases reported in Gujarat in the last 24 hours, the tally rose to 12,910 on Thursday, while the toll increased to 773 with the death of two dozen more patients -17 of them in Ahmedabad – health officials said.

Out of the 371new cases, 233 were from Ahmedabad district alone. Other districts from where significant number of cases have reported are Surat (34), Vadodara (24) and Mehsana (13).
Of the 24 patients who succumbed to the infection during the last 24 hours, as many as 17 died in different hospitals of Ahmedabad, three in Vadodara and one each in Surat, Anand, Kheda and Mehsana, she said. She added that as many as 269 persons recovered from the disease and discharged from different hospitals in the state in the same period, taking the number of such people to 5,488. “The recovery rate of Surat is 67.07 per cent, almost double than the national average. Vadodara’s recovery rate is 62.66 per cent.

Till now, Gujarat has conducted 1,66,152 tests, out of which 12,910 came positive, while 1,53,242 turned up negative.
Out of the total 12,910 cases registered in Gujarat so far, as many as 9,449 were reported in Ahmedabad district alone, followed by 1,227 in Surat and 750 in Vadodara.
‘Hu Pan Corona Warrior’ campaign launched
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Thursday launched a week-long campaign to educate citizens on issues related to COVID-19. The campaign, named ‘Hu Pan Corona Warrior’ (I too am corona warrior) was launched via video-conferencing from Gandhinagar.
As part of the campaign, influential persons, writers and artists would address people every day through Facebook Live to motivate as well as educate people about the pandemic and ways to stay safe as part, an official release said.
During the launch, Rupani said that people need to develop the habit of living with coronavirus while simultaneously waging a battle against it. As part of the campaign, spiritual leader and
orator Morari Bapu addressed the people on Thursday on how to live with the pandemic.
The campaign, which will run till May 27, is aimed at making people aware about basic rules to fight coronavirus. Rupani urged citizens to take selfies with grandparents and post them on social media platforms with hashtag ‘
‘ on May 22. On May 24, people can click photos wearing masks and post them using the same hashtag, the release said. On May 26, people will be encouraged to download Aarogya Setu app on their mobile phones, it added.
It was city’s hottest day this season
Ahmedabad was sizzling on Thursday, literally. On its hottest day this season, the city recorded maximum temperature of 44.1degree Celsius and minimum of 26 degrees. Gandhinagar recorded maximum temperature of 44 degrees. Across the state, Deesa was the hottest, with maximum temperature of 44.9 degrees.
IMD had predicted heat wave conditions in isolated pockets in Kutch district on May 22. According to its website, temperature is likely to hover around 43 degree in coming days in the city. Homemaker Deval Pathak (33), resident of Gurukul, said, “I avoid going out after it gets hot. I make essential purchases in the morning itself.”
